Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists (TERFs) are cis-women who don’t believe trans people truly exist and who believe women’s rights are damaged when trans women are treated equally and with dignity.
TERFs are willing to argue against the Equal Rights Amendment, against laws that would protect all women from being forced to dress or act a certain way by their bosses, all to deny trans people their right to exist in society.
As trans folks raise their voices to fight for their dignity and their rights, TERFs have learned to push back in subtle yet effective ways that appear progressive at the surface but cut deeply into trans women’s sense of self and safety.
TERF groups have become more vocal in their opposition to trans athletes, like JayCee Cooper. They are also increasingly partnering with conservative groups and lawmakers to testify against trans rights using a “feminist” angle.
Recently, a group named the Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF), submitted an amicus brief in a Supreme Court case in which a trans employee was fired for living in line with their gender identity. In it, WoLF argued that plaintiff Aimee Stephens is a man who wanted to wear a skirt while at work, which is the type of sex stereotyping forbidden by the landmark Title VII case, Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins.
