The Gender Justice Brunch is your time to socialize, network, celebrate and learn about a topic that affects our reproductive rights community.
With social games, mission-aligned activities, music by DJ Tricky Miki, a performance by Prairie Fire Choir, brunch drinks and food, and a lively discussion, this event is not to be missed.
Gretchen Sisson, PhD, and Gender Justice Board Member, Joy Parker will engage in a conversation: Exploring Adoption’s Place in Reproductive Justice: Indian Child Welfare Act and Domestic Adoption in the Dobbs Era.
With the US Supreme Court decisions in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization revoking federal protections for abortion and Brackeen v. Haaland upholding the Indian Child Welfare Act, we are in a political moment in which adoption is, increasingly, being revealed as an institution devoted to separating families and policing parenthood under the guise of feel-good family-building. Join us to learn more about the history, politics and privilege in the domestic adoption industry. Our expert speakers will explore new research on birth-parent experiences and the powerful possibilities of case law and policies that prioritize both family preservation and tribal sovereignty.

About the Speakers
Joy Parker is an Indigenous Abenaki granddaughter, niece, mother, auntie, midwife, and lawyer. She is one of the very few midwife-lawyers in the country. As an attorney, Joy focuses on serving Tribal governments and Native organizations with a focus on Tribal sovereignty, healthcare, and reproductive justice issues.
Dr. Gretchen Sisson is a sociologist who studies abortion and adoption in the United States. She is the author of Relinquished: The Politics of Adoption and the Privilege of American Motherhood. Her research examining adoption decision-making after abortion denial was cited in the Supreme Court’s dissent in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health from Justices Breyer, Kagan, and Sotomayor.
