No one's sex, gender, gender identity, or expression should prevent them from receiving the healthcare they need. Discrimination in healthcare is particularly a problem for transgender patients. In a national survey of over 6,000 individuals across all 50 states, high percentages of transgender respondents reported being denied equal treatment in doctor’s offices, hospitals, and emergency rooms. However, Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, race, age or disability by health programs that receive federal funds. We've been working to set the legal precedent that this ban on sex discrimination includes discrimination on the basis of transgender status.
