Texas Reaches New Low in Cruelty Towards Trans Kids
Saint Paul, Minn.—

Texas just declared that gender-affirming health care for trans kids is “child abuse” and instructed Department of Family and Protective Services to begin investigating all families with trans children in Texas and prosecuting their parents as child abusers. Parents could lose custody of their transgender children.

In response, Gender Justice Executive Director Megan Peterson released the following statement:

“Actually, what Texas is doing is child abuse. Shame on you, Texas. This is a repulsive and heinous escalation of the coordinated attack on transgender and LGB people that’s sweeping the country. It’s offensive and so deeply, deeply harmful to transgender youth and their families. The stigma and the fear this announcement inspires is just stunning.

“How many families will have to pack up their lives and move to another state? How many without the means to so will have their children removed from loving and affirming homes simply because of who they are? How many teachers will now be forced to report their trans students’ families to the state or risk losing their job and suffering criminal penalties?

“Our hearts are with all transgender children, transgender Texans, and their families today. The state’s action today is traumatic in and of itself and a politically-motivated act of cruelty.”
