Today, the Minnesota Senate Judiciary Committee advanced the Minnesota Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), a step toward ensuring that gender equality, reproductive freedom, racial justice and bodily autonomy for all are not just aspirations, but constitutional mandates.
Megan Peterson, executive director at Gender Justice, issued the following statement:
“In a year marked by violence, fear, and a federal occupation that cost lives and traumatized our communities, the Minnesota ERA is our line in the sand. It is how we say: in Minnesota, your dignity is not negotiable. Your body is not a political battleground. And our state will never use its laws or resources against our own people.
For our trans neighbors facing a coordinated effort to erase them from public life, and for immigrant families terrorized in their own backyards, this ERA is a declaration: you belong here, and your rights are not up for debate.
This is a chance for Minnesota to be clear about who we are — and who we refuse to become. We urge the full legislature to move swiftly, put the ERA on the ballot, and let Minnesotans send a clear message this November about who we are and the future we are building together.”
