Minnesota has strong protections for religious freedom. Minnesota has strong anti-discrimination protections. And these things make Minnesota a great state to live and work in.
But in Minnesota, and across the country, personal religious beliefs are increasingly being weaponized to weaken people’s civil rights — threatening their ability to participate in public life, get the health care they need, and keep their jobs and livelihoods.
That’s exactly what happened to our client, Reyzl Grace, a cherished school librarian who was effectively fired from the job she loved after coming out as trans.
Every person deserves the opportunity to work and live with dignity. And religious employers shouldn’t be able to impose their personal beliefs on secular employees.
Because let’s be clear: If what happened to Reyzl is allowed to stand, that could make thousands of Minnesota nurses, custodians, educators, and more vulnerable to workplace discrimination simply for accessing reproductive health care, being openly LGBTQ+, or being in interfaith or interracial marriages.
That’s why we’re taking this case to the Minnesota Supreme Court, and are proud to stand along Reyzl as she shares her story. Oral arguments take place on September 1, 2026. We encourage you to check back with Gender Justice for updates and see below for ways to get involved.
